Let start my collection of Great Little Translator Tools with a piece of "hardware" that can save a lot of mess to optical mouse users
The Original World's Cheapest Optical Mousepad It is the perfect way (at least in my case) to stop optical (LED) mouse cursor jumping around
(more often to the four corners of the screen
)After some months, I can say that it saved me some EUR making the purchase of an immune laser mouse
pointless, but I advice you to glue a clear film over the printed paper, so making it virtually wear-free.
TMXValidator developped by
Swordfish CAT, lets you validate any TMX memory, cleaning invalid characters. As they state "It checks your TMX files against TMX DTD and also
verifies if they follow the requiremenst described in
TMX
specifications." It work with TMX until 1.4 release.
And now that you checked your TMX and fixed invalid characters, edit it with
vTMXEditor by Logrus. As they state:
The vTMXEditor is a simple yet powerful tabular TMX data editor and has a range of unique and convenient functions built in:
- tmx-files splitting/combining
- tmx-file creation for the target language pair
- export/import into several other popular file formats
- searching units and text fragments with wildcard features
- tag cleaning (HTML, XML and RTF tags are supported)
Note: even if they claim
vTMXEditor can split a TMX file, it splits only TMXs that are 100% compliant, otherwise the only way AFAIK is to follow my
TMX splitting procedure.
Furthermore, if you try opening a very large file, e.g. my 800 MB TAUS Microsoft memory (but even smaller memories),
vTMXEditor crashes with an "Out of memory" message during UTF-8 to UTF-16 conversion (BTW
ALL TAUS memories are
UTF-8). Quite oddly, it not happened with the previous release that produced rather this error message "The file does not contain at least one Language Pair
"
(even if it clearly contained one regular language pair).
XLIFFChecker. the twin of TMXValidator. As they state "It checks your documents against the
XLIFF DTD (version 1.0) or XLIFF Schemas (versions 1.1 and 1.2).
It also verifies if they follow the requirements described in
XLIFF specifications. XLIFF is a complex format and
verifying against an XML grammar is not enough to ensure
compliance with the standard."
Calibre is a freeware ebook library manager. As they state "It can view, convert and catalog ebooks in
most of the major ebook formats. It can also talk to many ebook reader
devices. It can go out to the Internet and fetch metadata for your
books. It can download newspapers and convert them into ebooks for
convenient reading."
I used it to convert an .epub file into a .rtf file and viceversa, so being able to translate an e-book, and delivering it in the same format of the original file.
IntelliWebSearch with local dictionaries on CD-ROM
Personally, I do not like searching online for terminology, but rather on my many specialized CD dictionaries (in addition to my huge corpora indexed by Logiterm)
Also, I recently removed Babylon so I needed "something" just as fast and handy, able to recognize the select text, then giving me the translation with a couple of click, and I found that IntelliWebSearch served my purpose
However, this tool is designed to make Web searches, but after some attempts I figured out how using it with most of my dictionaries (even if some of them doesn't work so smoothly, due to the particular GUI)
So given that the "syntax" for CD dictionaries is not exactly user-friendly, and I wasn't able to find any advice on the Web, I decided to put here commands for major English to Italian technical dictionaries
